April 21 and 28 ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis will host its annual “spring training” training for anyone interested in becoming a mentor.  Mentors provide personalized one-to-one telephone support to those currently on a breast cancer journey.  All mentors complete training and are professionally supported.

This program is free and open to anyone who has experienced breast cancer as a patient, family or friend.  Training on April 21 and 28 commences at 8:45 am and is complete at 3:15 pm.

Sessions cover a medical update, coping with depression and self-care, legal and ethical issues of mentoring and effective listening skills.  These and other topics are designed to prepare mentors to provide the quality of personal support that has made ABCD renowned.  Currently confirmed presenters include:  Hanadi Bu-Ali, MD – Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare; Carrie Ripp, MSW – Stillwaters Cancer Support Center;  Virginia R. Finn, JD; and Jane Hathaway.

Previous involvement with ABCD is not necessary. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Please note that patients in initial treatment should not plan to train as a mentor yet.  Generally, being one year from diagnosis is advisable.
